Root Canal Treatment

A comfortable, effective way to save your natural tooth

Root canal treatment is used to save a tooth that has become infected or inflamed inside. When the nerve of a tooth is affected by deep decay, a crack, trauma or an old restoration, it can cause pain, sensitivity or swelling. Rather than removing the tooth, a root canal allows us to gently remove the infection, relieve discomfort and preserve your natural smile for many years to come.

Modern root canal treatment is far more comfortable than people often expect. At The Mead Dental Practice, we use a calm, gentle approach and clear communication throughout, helping you feel fully supported from start to finish.

Why a root canal may be needed

Inside every tooth is a soft centre called the pulp, which contains the nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive. If bacteria reach this area, it can lead to inflammation or infection. This may cause pain — although in some cases the tooth can become infected without obvious symptoms.

If left untreated, the infection can spread and the tooth may be lost. Root canal treatment removes the bacteria, stabilises the tooth and protects it from further problems. For many patients, it becomes the most comfortable and reliable way to keep their natural tooth.

What happens during treatment

Your appointment begins with local anaesthetic, ensuring the tooth is fully numb before we begin. The infected tissue inside the tooth is then gently cleaned and disinfected using modern techniques designed for comfort and accuracy. The canals are shaped, dried and sealed to prevent bacteria from returning.

In most cases, the tooth will then need to be restored with a filling or a crown to strengthen it and protect it from future damage. Your dentist will discuss the best option for you, explaining everything clearly so you feel confident in your treatment plan.

A predictable, long-lasting solution

When cared for properly, a tooth that has had root canal treatment can function comfortably for many years. Regular examinations, hygiene visits and good home-care all help support long-term success.

Many patients are surprised by how straightforward and comfortable treatment feels — and relieved to keep their natural tooth rather than consider removal.
