1. Learn To Brush Properly
You’d be surprised at how many people simply don’t brush correctly. The internet is a fantastic resource to learn how to properly brush your teeth to ensure a perfect clean all around. Or, even better, talk to your dentist and hygienist who will be able to give personalised advice based on any conditions you may have.
The reality is, brushing your teeth poorly is just as unhelpful as not using a toothbrush at all. So, as a general rule of thumb, make sure that you don’t rush through brushing your teeth. Also, move your brush gently and in circular motions to get rid of plaque.
Removing plaque is critical because if you leave this sticky substance on your pearly whites, it will harden. This will ultimately lead to the buildup of calculus, or tartar, on your teeth. And this, in turn, can lead to gingivitis, or the early stage of gum disease.
2. Use Fluoride Toothpaste
As far as toothpaste is concerned, make sure that you don’t just use a whitening toothpaste or a toothpaste with your favourite flavour. Instead, the most important factor in choosing your toothpaste is whether it has fluoride in it.
Fluoride offers the benefit of helping to prevent cavities in adults and children alike. When you brush with fluoridated toothpaste, this will help to strengthen your teeth’s exposed roots and weak spots. In addition, it will help with preventing tooth decay’s early stages.
If your children use fluoride, be sure to supervise them. Also, any child under 6 years old should use only a pea-size amount of fluoridated toothpaste.
Note that you can also use fluoride-containing mouthwash to further protect your teeth from cavities.
3. Get In and Around The Teeth
It is vital to remove old particles of food that get stuck between your teeth and to clean around a tooth in areas that your toothbrush normally can’t get to. This can be a little tricky, especially in those hard-to-reach areas, but you can get a variety of gadgets such as interdental brushes that are much easier to use.
4. Be Sure to Brush Your Tongue, Too
Note that plaque can also easily accumulate on the tongue. This can cause you to have a bad odour in your mouth. However, it may also cause you to suffer from other dental health issues.
So, be sure to brush the tongue gently each time you scrub those pearly whites.
5. Visit Your Dentist More Often

You want to avoid sugary foods as well as trying to drink less coffee and tea, due to the additional staining that it can cause on the surface of your teeth. You also want to avoid eating too many acidic foods because they can damage the enamel coating on your teeth.
7. Drink More Water
Drinking more water means that you’re less likely to drink fizzy drinks, coffee and other liquids that could stain or damage your teeth. Water also helps to improve your mood, keep you hydrated and keep your mouth clean, so it is a win-win all around.
8. Cut Out Bad Habits

9. Brush Twice Every Day
Make it a goal to ensure that you brush your teeth at least twice every day. Once in the morning and once at night is preferred, but if you already do this then why not go the extra mile and brush after meals as well?
